From Work to Display
How can works of art and their unique qualities be conveyed in the digital sphere? This question is the focus of the project "From Work to Display". Since February 2020, Kunsthalle Mannheim and Kunstmuseum Stuttgart have been jointly exploring ways to create an innovative, tailor-made communicative format for each of 32 selected works of art from both museums’ collections. This four-year project has been made possible by funding from the Fonds Digital of the Federal Cultural Foundation. Since September 2020, the two houses have been cooperating with the Vienna-based Fluxguide Ausstellungssysteme GmbH.
An individual digital presentation form is being developed for each of the selected works – a spectrum ranging from 19th century objects to contemporary pieces. Wilhelm Leibl's painting "Die rechte Hand aus dem Langbehn-Bildnis" (The right hand from the Langbehn portrait) dating from 1877, from the collection of Kunsthalle Mannheim, will be translated into an application, for example, whereby users can recreate and discover for themselves the detailed portrayal of the art critic Langbehn’s hand position. In the so-called "Hand-O-Mat", a photo of one's own gesture can be used to search for images of similar hand positions in art history. A database from the collections of both museums is available for this purpose.
